Jim Wells County, TX (October 23, 2026) – A 47-year-old driver from Orange Grove died Wednesday, October 21, in a two-vehicle collision at the intersection of US 281 and County Road 239. Four people in the other vehicle were hospitalized. It happened at about 9:30 a.m.
The woman was driving a 2015 Ford Explorer westbound on County Road 239 toward US 281. A 2020 Chevrolet Silverado was heading north in the outside lane, just south of the intersection. A 30-year-old driver from Weslaco was at the wheel, with three children, ages 13, 9 and 8, inside.
According to the initial report, the Explorer did not yield at the stop sign, and the Silverado struck its driver's side. Both vehicles came to rest in the grassy median. The woman died at the scene, and the four people in the Silverado were taken to a hospital in Corpus Christi.
Investigators are still working to determine exactly what happened.
We extend our deepest sympathy to the woman’s loved ones and to the families of the four people hospitalized.
How Fault Is Decided at Stop-Sign Intersections in Jim Wells County, TX
Texas law generally requires a driver at a stop sign to stop and yield to traffic that is already in the intersection or approaching closely enough to be an immediate hazard. Proving that a driver broke that rule usually takes more than a single statement. Fault is typically built from the written police report, photographs, vehicle damage, and witness accounts.
Rural intersections in Jim Wells County, where farm and county roads meet highways like SH 44, tend to have long sight lines and higher speeds, and surveillance video may be limited. That makes physical evidence matter: skid marks, final vehicle positions, damage patterns, and data stored in a vehicle's event data recorder. Vehicles get repaired or sold, and data can be overwritten, so these details may disappear within weeks.
Texas also applies proportionate responsibility. A person found more than 50 percent responsible generally cannot recover damages, and any award is reduced by that person's share of fault. Even a driver with the right of way may face arguments about speed, lane position, or attention. A car accident lawyer can step in to help gather and preserve evidence, work with reconstruction specialists, and address those arguments with insurers.
