The SUV caught fire, and the Austin Fire Department had to force open two doors. They found two people inside who had died. The third occupant was taken by ambulance to a hospital with life-threatening injuries.

The cause of the accident is still under review.

We extend our sincere condolences to the deceased people's loved ones and wish the injured person a strong recovery.

What Does Underinsured Motorist Coverage Cover in Austin, TX?

Underinsured motorist coverage, typically called UIM, can help pay losses when an at-fault driver's liability policy is too low to cover them. In Texas, insurers must offer it with auto policies, and a driver must reject it in writing to go without it. It may apply to medical bills, lost income, and other damages.

Texas requires drivers to carry liability insurance of at least $30,000 per injured person, $60,000 per accident, and $25,000 for property damage. Those limits can run out quickly when injuries are serious, which is the gap UIM is meant to address. Whether it applies depends on the policy language and the choices made when it was purchased.

Many drivers may carry only the minimum, so a claim can easily exceed the at-fault driver's limits. Policies usually have notice requirements or consent-to-settle clauses, and settling with the at-fault driver without following them could affect UIM benefits.

In these cases, a car accident lawyer can review the declarations page, compare the at-fault driver's limits with the losses, and explain how the policy's UIM terms may apply to each specific situation.
