Dallam County, TX (October 9, 2026) – A 70-year-old man died after a three-vehicle collision on US 54, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety.

Authorities said a 2011 Chevrolet pickup was towing a 2006 Chevrolet pickup southwest on US 54. At the same time, a 2015 Ford pickup pulling a trailer was heading northeast near FM 3212.

According to officials, the driver of the 2011 Chevrolet tried to avoid hitting the back of a semi ahead of it. The towed pickup began fishtailing, and both vehicles went into the northeast lanes. The Ford pickup then hit the Chevrolet.

The Ford's driver was taken to a hospital, where he died from his injuries. The driver of the 2011 Chevrolet was taken to a hospital with minor injuries. The driver of the 2006 Chevrolet was taken to Northwest Hospital in Amarillo with serious injuries.

We offer our deepest condolences to the family of the deceased man and wish those injured a strong recovery.

How Does Texas Proportionate Responsibility Affect an Injury Claim in Dallam County, TX?

Texas uses a rule called proportionate responsibility to divide fault when more than one person may have played a part in an injury. Under this rule, an injured person cannot recover if found more than 50 percent responsible, and any award is reduced by the percentage assigned to them.

Those percentages are not decided by the first adjuster who calls. They come from evidence, including photographs, vehicle data, witness statements, and the official report.

A wrongful death lawyer can test an insurer's proposed split against that evidence, gather records that support the injured person's account, and make sure each other party's share of responsibility is counted separately.

Texas generally allows two years from the date of injury to file a lawsuit, but the evidence that decides responsibility fades much sooner. Keeping photographs, notes, and witness contact details, and avoiding any signed release until the full facts are known, protects the claim.
