Deaf Smith County, TX (October 17, 2026) – A pickup passenger was killed, and two drivers were injured in a collision involving a Dodge Ram pickup and a semi-truck on State Highway 214 in Deaf Smith County on Friday, October 16.

The crash occurred around 5:13 p.m., about three miles west of FM 1412.

According to the Texas Department of Public Safety, the pickup was heading east when its driver pulled onto the right shoulder to attempt a U-turn. A semi-truck traveling behind it moved into the westbound lane to pass. The pickup then turned left into the truck's path, resulting in a collision.

The pickup passenger died at the crash site. The pickup driver was taken to a hospital with serious injuries, while the semi-truck driver was hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries.

The Texas Department of Public Safety is investigating what led to the collision.

We extend our sincere condolences to the family of the passenger who lost their life and wish those injured a full recovery.

What Compensation Can Families Recover After a Fatal Crash in Hereford, TX?

After a fatal crash in Hereford, families may recover compensation for lost financial support, loss of companionship, mental anguish, and funeral costs.

Under Texas law, the surviving spouse, children, or parents may file a wrongful death claim. If none files within three months, the estate's representative may file unless the family objects.

Along with the family's claim, the estate may bring a separate survival claim for losses the person experienced before death, such as medical bills and pain. These losses belong to the deceased.

In rare cases, exemplary damages may be available if a driver acted with gross negligence, such as driving drunk. Only certain family members are eligible to receive these damages.

In most cases, families have two years from the date of death to file a wrongful death lawsuit in Texas. Missing the deadline may bar your claim.

Insurers sometimes question how a crash happened or downplay what a family has lost. A wrongful death lawyer can go through the records, speak with the insurer on your family's behalf, and explain which types of damages may apply in your case.
