Houston, TX (October 23, 2026) – A man who appears to be in his 30s died Thursday, October 22, along the Katy Freeway service road at Wirt Road.

The Houston Police Department received reports of a person lying in the road at about 5:30 a.m. Part of the inbound service road lanes was blocked, though the main lanes of the highway did not seem to be affected.

The vehicle involved in the crash did not stay to help the pedestrian. It is unclear what led to the collision.

Investigators are still searching for the responsible driver.

Our condolences go out to the man's loved ones.

What Must Drivers Do After Striking a Pedestrian in Houston, TX?

Texas law requires any driver involved in an accident that injures or kills someone to stop right away, stay nearby, and give their name, address, and vehicle registration to the injured person or anyone else present. The driver must also provide reasonable help, including arranging transport to a hospital when needed. Leaving without doing those things can lead to criminal charges, and in some cases a felony.

A criminal case against a driver who left is separate from a civil claim for compensation, and either can move forward without the other. The civil filing deadline in Texas is generally two years from the date of injury, or from the date of death in a wrongful death claim. The harder question is often who the driver is.

When a driver is never found, insurance can still matter. A person's own uninsured motorist coverage may apply to a driver who cannot be identified, though policies often set conditions such as prompt reporting and notice to the insurer. Those terms vary, and missing one can complicate a claim.

In these cases, a wrongful death lawyer can review the policy, help send preservation requests for video and records before they are lost, and keep the civil deadline in view while the search for the driver continues.
