Who Pays My Medical Bills After a Hit-and-Run in San Antonio, TX?
After a hit-and-run in San Antonio, your medical bills may be paid through your own auto insurance, such as personal injury protection (PIP) or uninsured motorist coverage. Your health insurance may also cover treatment costs while your claim moves forward.
Unless you rejected it in writing, every Texas auto policy must include PIP coverage. PIP pays your medical bills and part of your lost income no matter who caused the crash. The standard minimum is $2,500 per person.
For costs beyond your PIP limits, uninsured motorist coverage may help when the driver who hit you cannot be found. In Texas, this coverage generally applies to a hit-and-run if the other vehicle made contact with you or your vehicle.
To protect your coverage, report the hit-and-run to police as soon as possible and notify your insurer promptly. A police report helps show the crash happened and that the other driver left without stopping.
In some cases, police may later identify the driver who fled. If that happens, you may also be able to file a claim against that driver's insurance company.
If your insurer delays or denies your uninsured motorist claim, a car accident lawyer can gather the proof needed to support it. An attorney can also deal with the insurance company for you while you focus on getting better.
