Which Evidence Matters The Most After a Serious Traffic Injury in Houston, TX?
Photos of the vehicles and surroundings, contact details for witnesses, medical records, repair estimates, and any onboard data recorder or surveillance video can all matter. Some of this evidence disappears quickly, since vehicles get repaired or sold and business cameras typically record over footage within days.
Houston drivers rely on heavily traveled routes such as Beltway 8, where gas stations, shopping centers, and other businesses line the way. Many of those businesses have security cameras, and the footage may be overwritten within days or weeks. A car accident lawyer can send written preservation requests to businesses, drivers, and insurers, and can help gather the documents that tie the evidence together.
Many newer vehicles store speed, braking, and seat belt data in an onboard data recorder. Texas law generally treats that data as belonging to the vehicle's owner, so access typically requires the owner's consent or a legal order. If a vehicle is repaired, sold, or sent to a salvage yard before the data is downloaded, it may be lost for good.
