Sherman, TX (October 10, 2026) – A 23-year-old passenger died in a single-vehicle rollover crash in the 5700 block of North US Highway 75 East Control Road in Sherman on Thursday, October 8, at approximately 12:58 a.m.
According to the Sherman Police Department, officers responded after receiving calls reporting the crash. Callers indicated that both occupants had been ejected from the vehicle.
Officers found the badly damaged vehicle near the road’s western edge. The passenger was found dead about 15 feet west of the service road. The 23-year-old driver was lying in the road but fled on foot after seeing an officer. He was later detained.
The injured driver received hospital treatment before his arrest for intoxication manslaughter. He was held in Grayson County Jail on a $500,000 bond.
Investigators reported evidence that intoxication contributed to the passenger’s death. Both occupants played football at Southeastern Oklahoma State University, which confirmed one student’s death.
The Sherman Police Department’s Critical Accident Investigation Team is investigating the crash.
We extend our sincere condolences to the passenger’s family and loved ones.
Who Can File a Wrongful Death Claim in Sherman, TX?
A surviving spouse, children, or parents may file a wrongful death claim in Sherman, TX, when another party is legally responsible for the death. Texas law gives these relatives the right to bring a claim.
To show what happened, crash reports, photographs, available video, and witness accounts can help establish how the collision occurred. This evidence may support the family’s claim if responsibility is disputed.
Depending on the family’s losses, a claim may include lost financial support, loss of companionship, mental anguish, and funeral expenses. The amount depends on the losses each eligible family member experienced because of the death.
If no eligible relative files, the estate’s executor or administrator generally must bring the action after three calendar months, unless all eligible beneficiaries request otherwise. This does not shorten the deadline for filing a lawsuit.
Under Texas law, wrongful death lawsuits generally must be filed within two years of the death, although exceptions may apply. Missing that deadline can prevent the case from moving forward.
When filing questions arise, a wrongful death lawyer can explain who should bring the case for your family. An attorney can also handle insurance discussions and the paperwork needed to move the claim forward.
