Harris County, TX (October 14, 2026) – Two people died in a three-vehicle crash on the 17400 block of the East Freeway (Interstate 10) near Monmouth Drive in Harris County on Tuesday, October 13.

Emergency crews were dispatched to the crash site.

According to the Harris County Sheriff’s Office, a white Jeep Wrangler and a red Ford Explorer were traveling eastbound when the Explorer struck the rear of the Jeep. Sheriff Ed Gonzalez said preliminary findings indicated that the Explorer was being driven recklessly.

The Explorer then went down an embankment. Its male driver and a passenger died at the crash site, while the Jeep driver sustained minor injuries.

All eastbound lanes were closed following the crash. One lane reopened at 4 p.m., and the remaining lanes reopened by 6 p.m.

We extend our sincere condolences to the families of those who died and wish the injured driver a full recovery.

How Long Do Families Have to File a Wrongful Death Claim in Harris County, TX?

In Harris County and throughout Texas, families generally have two years from the date of death to file a wrongful death lawsuit.

In certain circumstances, different deadlines or additional requirements may apply. If your claim involves a government entity, you may need to provide formal notice much earlier. Checking these requirements can help your family avoid missing an important deadline.

Under Texas law, surviving spouses, children, and parents can bring a wrongful death claim. If none files within three months, the executor or administrator generally must pursue the case unless all eligible family members request otherwise.

Depending on your family’s losses, compensation may cover lost financial support, household services, companionship, mental anguish, and qualifying funeral expenses. To recover these damages, your family must establish that another party was legally responsible for the death.

Once the filing deadline passes, your family may lose the right to pursue compensation through a lawsuit. Even if you are discussing a settlement with an insurance company, those negotiations generally do not extend the filing period.

If you are unsure how much time your family has to file, a wrongful death lawyer can review your circumstances and identify the applicable deadlines. An attorney can also prepare the necessary paperwork and handle communications with insurers.
