San Antonio, TX (October 16, 2026) – Two responders were injured Wednesday, October 14, at a vacant apartment complex on San Antonio's North Side. Flames broke out just after 5:30 a.m. at the Sante Fe Apartments off Blanco Road near Gilbert Lane.

The San Antonio Fire Department said that while crews searched the boarded-up building, one firefighter fell through a section of floor weakened by the flames. Emergency units used a ladder to pull the person out quickly. That person was not seriously harmed and did not need to go to the hospital.

A second responder had minor burns to the hands and was taken to a hospital as a precaution. Emergency units went inside because they could not rule out that someone was sheltering in the building. No one has been found inside, and no one has been reported missing.

This incident remains under investigation.

Our thoughts are with both responders as they recover.

How Workers' Compensation Work for Firefighters in San Antonio, TX

Workers' compensation usually starts with paperwork and timing. In Texas, an injured worker generally must tell the employer about a job-related injury within 30 days, and a claim generally must be filed within one year. For a firefighter, that can mean reporting even a minor strain or smoke exposure promptly, since some problems appear or worsen days later.

Texas workers' compensation is generally a no-fault system, so benefits do not depend on proving the employer did something wrong. Covered benefits can include medical treatment for the work injury, a share of lost wages while a worker recovers, and death benefits for eligible family members.

Temporary income benefits are generally calculated at 70 percent of the wages lost, up to a weekly cap, and a short waiting period applies before they begin.

Firefighters also face illnesses that develop over years rather than from a single injury. Texas law includes presumptions that certain illnesses, such as some cancers and heart and respiratory problems, may be treated as job-related when specific requirements are met.

In San Antonio, a city or other public employer may provide coverage for first responders through insurance, self-insurance, or a risk pool, so how a claim is handled can vary. Because workers' compensation generally limits claims against the employer, a personal injury lawyer can also look at whether a separate claim against a property owner or equipment maker may exist.
